AI Search Optimization: Getting Named by ChatGPT and Google AI

When a customer asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode who to call, the answer draws on listings, websites and reviews. This work makes what those sources say about you accurate, consistent and specific enough to name you.

In short

  • AI assistants recommend businesses from what they can read about them: listings, website pages and reviews. Nobody documents exactly how they choose.
  • Google says no special markup gets you into AI Overviews or AI Mode; accurate profiles and genuinely helpful pages do the work.
  • Wrong hours, an old phone number or a vague service list in one listing can follow you into AI answers, so consistency comes first.
  • AI search traffic is not reported separately in Search Console, so track it with repeat prompt tests and by asking callers where they heard of you.

AI search optimization makes sure ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and other assistants find accurate, consistent and specific facts about your business when a customer asks who to call. It changes whether your name appears in that short answer, and whether what the assistant says about your hours, services and service area is true.

What's included

The work starts with a baseline you can check yourself, then fixes the sources assistants read. It includes:

  • A prompt test list in your customers' words. A fixed set of questions a real customer would type or say, such as "who can come today for a burst pipe" or "best place for a brake job near me", run across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Overviews and other assistants. We record who gets named and what is said about you.
  • Source tracing. For each wrong or missing fact, we find the listing, page or review it came from.
  • Listing consistency. Name, phone, categories, hours, services and service area matching everywhere an assistant might read them: your Google profile, your own site, Bing Places, Apple's business listings and the main directories in your trade.
  • Answer pages. Service pages and FAQs that answer the questions customers ask before they call: what you do, where you go, how fast you come, what affects the price. Written for people, which is also what Google's helpful content guidance asks for.
  • Structured data that matches the page. LocalBusiness markup for your name, hours, phone and services, kept identical to what the page shows.
  • A crawl check. Making sure your site does not block the search engines and assistants that read it, and that key facts are in page text, not buried in images.
  • Review substance. A steady, compliant request routine that asks every customer, so new reviews describe real jobs in real detail. Assistants summarize what reviewers say, not just the star rating.
  • Monthly re-testing of the same prompts, with a short note on what moved and why.

What an AI assistant draws on

An assistant's answer Which local businesses it names

  • Web results Pages that answer the question
  • Listings Your profile and directory entries
  • Reviews What customers say, and where
  • Your website Clear facts about what you do
Assistants draw on web results, listings and reviews. How they rank businesses is not documented, and nobody can promise a placement.

How it differs by kind of business

AI search matters most where customers research before they buy, and least in the moment of an emergency. That one fact decides how much of your budget belongs here.

Kind of business What a customer asks an assistant What the assistant must get right
Emergency (towing, plumbing, garage doors, restoration) "Who is reliable and open now?", often before the emergency, or to vet a name afterward Your real hours, whether you take after-hours calls, where you go, a phone number that works
Planned, high-ticket projects (remodeling, contractors, roofing, paving) "How do I choose a contractor?", "What should a kitchen remodel include?" Your process, specialties, service area and what past customers say about the work
Recurring services (lawn care, pest control, trash service) "Which company has the best plan?", "Who is easiest to deal with?" What each plan includes, how scheduling works, reviews over time
Storefronts (auto repair, dog daycare, med spas, dispensaries) "Where can I get this today?", "Which place is good for this?" Address, hours, what you offer or stock, how to book

Storefronts and service-area businesses must get different facts right. A storefront needs its address, hours and booking link correct everywhere, and should never hide its address. A service-area business hides its street address on the profile and must state plainly, on its site and listings, which towns it covers, or an assistant may decide it only serves the area around its yard.

Urgency sets how much weight to put here. The driver whose car just died usually taps the Maps result, so a towing company's AI Overviews work is about accuracy more than reach. A homeowner planning a remodel might ask an assistant a dozen questions over weeks, so planned businesses get the most from answer pages.

Buying once or staying on a plan changes what the customer is comparing. One-time customers want to know you do the job and come fast. Recurring customers compare plans, contracts and how easy you are to deal with over a year, so plan details and long-run reviews carry the weight.

Regulated storefronts carry one more constraint. A dispensary's pages and a med spa's pages must stay inside product and medical claim rules, because an assistant may quote them word for word.

What results look like and when

Fixes to your own facts usually show up first, but on the assistants' schedule, not yours. No one controls when an assistant re-reads a source, so set expectations in months, not days.

  • First two weeks: baseline. Run the prompt list, record every answer, and list wrong facts with their sources. This is where old phone numbers, closed locations and services you stopped offering tend to turn up.
  • First month: corrections. Listings and profiles get fixed, and core pages get rewritten to state facts plainly. Corrections can start appearing in answers within weeks, and some take longer.
  • Months two to six: content and reviews compound. Answer pages get indexed and reviews accumulate. This is when you are more likely to be named for questions where you were missing before. It is gradual and uneven, and different assistants move at different speeds.
  • Ongoing: monthly re-tests. The same prompts, the same tools, compared month over month, alongside calls that mention an assistant.

Be clear-eyed about measurement. Google does not report AI Overviews or AI Mode traffic separately in Search Console, and many customers read the answer and call without clicking. That is why the prompt test and the "how did you hear about us" question matter. If you also want the operations side of AI, such as a receptionist that answers those calls, that is our AI implementation work.

How VETS Growth Marketing helps

AI search is a project with a dated outcome: a baseline prompt report in the first two weeks, the listings you control corrected in the first month, then answer pages and reviews on a schedule. Your Google profile, website, Bing and Apple listings stay in your name, with no long-term contract. We report what assistants say about you each month and the booked jobs that trace back to them, not vague visibility scores. In a growth consultation we review your profile, site, ads and follow-up, and we can put a few of your customers' questions to an assistant while you watch, so you see what it says about you today.

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee ChatGPT or Google AI will recommend my business?

No, and be wary of anyone who says they can. Neither OpenAI nor Google publishes how its assistant picks which businesses to name, and the answers change from one day to the next. What we can do is make sure every source those tools read about you is accurate, complete and specific, then test the same prompts every month and show you what changed.

Is AI search optimization different from regular SEO?

Mostly it is the same foundation with a different finish. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, with no extra requirements, so a strong profile, clear pages and steady reviews still matter most. The difference is emphasis: answers to specific customer questions, facts that match across every listing, and reviews that describe the job carry more weight when a machine is summarizing you in two sentences.

Do I need special schema, an llms.txt file or an AI plugin?

Google documents no special markup or file for getting into AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard LocalBusiness structured data is worth having because it helps search engines read your name, hours and service details, but it is not a ticket in. Vendors selling a special AI file or plugin as the answer are selling something no search engine has said it uses.

ChatGPT says something wrong about my business. How do I fix it?

Find where the wrong fact comes from. It is usually an outdated directory listing, an old page on your site, a review describing a service you no longer offer, or a competitor's details mixed with yours. Correct the source, make your own pages state the right fact plainly, and test again over the following weeks. You cannot edit the assistant's answer directly, only the sources it reads.

How do I know if AI search is sending me customers?

Partly, not perfectly. Search Console does not separate AI Overviews traffic from regular search, and many people read an AI answer and call you without ever clicking. We combine three signals: a fixed prompt test run every month, referral visits from assistants in your analytics, and an "AI assistant" option when your team asks callers how they heard about you.
