Key takeaways
- No one outside the AI companies knows exactly how assistants pick a business. They draw on web pages, listings and reviews, so make those clear and consistent.
- Spell out each service in plain words: house washing, roof soft washing, concrete, commercial, and what you don't do.
- Test monthly with the questions your customers actually ask, and write down who is named and why.
- Reviews that name the surface and the result give assistants something specific to repeat.
To get your pressure washing company recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants, make it easy for them to find clear, consistent facts about you: what you clean, where you work, how you do it, and what customers say. No one can guarantee a mention, because the assistants don't publish how they choose. You can make yourself the easiest company to describe.
How AI assistants choose businesses
AI assistants with web access build their answers from what they can find: search results, business listings, your website, review sites and mentions elsewhere (OpenAI on ChatGPT search). How they rank one company over another is not documented, so treat anyone who claims a guaranteed method with suspicion.
What we do know is what they need to answer a pressure washing question. A homeowner rarely asks "best pressure washer near me". They ask "who can get black streaks off my roof without damaging the shingles" or "do I need soft washing or pressure washing for vinyl siding". An assistant can only name you for those questions if your pages and reviews talk about roofs, shingles, soft washing and vinyl in plain words.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode work the same way: Google documents no special markup to get into them, and normal SEO and helpful content apply (Google on AI features). Search Console does not report AI traffic separately, so don't expect a neat number. The AI Overviews guide covers Google's side in more detail.
What an AI assistant draws on
An assistant's answer Which local businesses it names
- Web results Pages that answer the question
- Listings Your profile and directory entries
- Reviews What customers say, and where
- Your website Clear facts about what you do
Fixes that help
- Give each service its own page. House washing, roof soft washing, driveway and concrete cleaning, and commercial exterior cleaning, each explained in customer words: what it removes, what method you use and why, and how long it lasts.
- Say what you don't do. If you don't clean tile roofs or wash fleet trucks, say so. Assistants that see a clear boundary are less likely to describe you wrongly.
- Answer the questions homeowners worry about. Plants and pets, windows and seals, roof warranties, whether they need to be home. Short, direct answers on your site are easy to quote.
- State your service area in text. List the towns and neighborhoods you serve on the page, not only on a map image.
- Make every listing match. Your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and industry directories should carry the same name, phone, categories and services (Bing Places).
- Caption your before-and-after photos. "Roof soft wash, asphalt shingles, black streaks removed" tells a machine what the photo shows. "Before and after!" does not.
- Earn real mentions elsewhere. A spot on an HOA's vendor list, a real estate agent's recommended-vendors page or a local business group's directory is the kind of outside proof assistants can find.
Testing your visibility
Test your visibility by asking the assistants what your customers ask, once a month, and writing down the answers. Use the same prompts each time so you can see change. Add your service area where the prompt says "near me" or "my area".
Prompts to start with:
- Who is the best house washing company in my area?
- I got an HOA letter about mildew on my siding. Who can clean it this week?
- Who can soft wash my roof and get the black streaks off without damaging the shingles?
- Is pressure washing or soft washing better for vinyl siding? Who does it near me?
- I'm listing my house next month. Who can pressure wash the driveway and the front of the house?
- Which pressure washing company cleans restaurant drive-thrus and dumpster pads?
- Who can wash my house and clean the gutters in the same visit?
For each answer, log four things: which companies are named, whether you are, what the assistant says about you, and which sources it cites or links. If it describes you wrongly, such as missing roof cleaning or naming the wrong area, find the page or listing that says so and fix it there. Run the same test in ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and at least one other assistant, because each draws on different sources.
Reviews and AI
Reviews shape how assistants describe you, not just whether they name you. A pile of "great job!" reviews gives an assistant nothing to repeat. A review that says the crew soft washed the roof, covered the plants and left the black streaks gone gives it a specific, quotable reason to recommend you for that job.
Ask every customer for an honest review, right after the job, and suggest they mention what you cleaned. Don't offer discounts for reviews, and don't ask only the happy customers. Google's policy bans both (Google's review policy). The Google reviews guide covers the asking routine.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
We run the prompt test for your company, fix the pages, listings and photo captions that assistants misread, and build a review routine that produces specific, honest reviews. Your website and profiles stay in your name. The work is scoped as a project with dates, and we report calls and booked jobs from search, with the monthly prompt log alongside. Bring your own ChatGPT results to a growth consultation and we will show you what the assistants are missing about you.
