Key takeaways
- For most med spas the right primary category is Medical spa, because it covers a mixed injectables, laser and skin menu in one signal.
- Add a secondary category only when a treatment line has its own device, provider time and pricing behind it.
- Check which categories the med spas in the Map Pack use for the treatments you want more of before you add anything.
- Change categories rarely, one at a time and never right before wedding season or the New Year rush.
The best Google Business Profile categories for a med spa start with Medical spa as the primary category. Add secondary categories such as Skin care clinic or Laser hair removal service only for treatment lines you actually run. Categories tell Google which searches your profile is relevant to, so each one should match a real part of your menu.
Choosing the primary category
Pick Medical spa as your primary category unless one treatment line clearly brings in most of your new patients. The primary category carries the most weight of anything you choose, and Google treats relevance as one of the three things that decide local rankings (Google's ranking factors).
Medical spa fits the way most new patients find you. Someone with a friend's recommendation searches "med spa near me". Someone with a wedding in four months searches "medical spa" plus a treatment. Someone with a skin concern searches the concern. A Medical spa category with a full services list catches all three.
There are two exceptions worth thinking through:
- A laser-first business. If you are really a laser hair removal studio that added a few facials, Laser hair removal service may describe you better as the primary, and Medical spa can sit underneath it.
- A physician practice with an aesthetic side. If patients walk into a dermatology or plastic surgery office, the categories should describe that practice. Google's guidelines have specific rules for practitioners and for businesses that share a location. Read them before you split one front door into several profiles (Google's guidelines).
Google also asks you to use as few categories as it takes to describe the core business, and to avoid using them as keywords (Google's category help). A primary category is a statement of what you are, not a list of what you sell.
How categories work for a med spa
- Primary category One: the service most of your work comes from
- Secondary categories Only services you really offer
- Services Listed and described under each category
Secondary categories that fit
A secondary category fits when a patient could book that service on its own and you have the device, the trained provider and the pricing to deliver it. The table covers the candidates most med spas look at.
| Category | Add it when | Leave it off when |
|---|---|---|
| Skin care clinic | Facials, peels, microneedling or other skin rejuvenation run as their own booked service line | Skin care is only an add-on at the end of an injectables visit |
| Laser hair removal service | You own or lease a hair removal laser and sell treatment packages | You refer laser work out or only offer it on occasional device days |
| Facial spa | You sell non-medical facials that people book like a spa visit | Your facials are clinical and already covered by Skin care clinic |
| Tattoo removal service | Your laser is set up for tattoo removal and you take those patients | You would turn those calls away |
| Day spa | You offer massage or other spa services with no medical component | The only "spa" in the business is the word in your name |
| Weight loss service | You run a supervised weight-loss program as a distinct service | Body contouring is the only thing you offer near that topic |
| Dermatologist | A dermatologist sees patients at this location as part of the business | No dermatologist practices there |
Category names in the picker change over time, so type the treatment into the category field and choose the closest exact match Google offers. Some of what you sell, such as injectables or body contouring, may not have a category that fits cleanly. Those treatments belong in the services list and on your own treatment pages, not in a stretched category that confuses patients who see it on Maps.
How to check competitors
- List the searches you want to win. Write down the treatments you have open capacity for, phrased the way patients search: "med spa", "lip filler", "laser hair removal", "microneedling", "body contouring".
- Search them from your front door. Run each search on a phone at or near the clinic. Maps results change with distance, so a search from home tells you less.
- Record the Map Pack. For each search, note the three businesses shown and the primary category printed under each name.
- Find their secondary categories. Google doesn't print these on the listing. A category-checking browser extension or a local audit tool can list them. Treat what you find as a clue, not a rulebook.
- Compare menus, not just categories. Open each competitor's website. If a laser studio with Laser hair removal service as its primary outranks every med spa for that search, you have learned how Google reads that search.
- Make one change and wait. Add the single category that matches a real service line and a gap you found. Then watch calls, website clicks and booking clicks in the profile's performance view for several weeks before changing anything else.
When not to change categories
Leave your categories alone during a busy season, during any verification or suspension review, and whenever the reason is a promotion rather than a permanent service. Editing a category can send the profile back through verification (Google's category help), and a profile under review is a bad thing to have in the weeks before wedding season or the New Year resolution rush.
Three changes that look reasonable and usually are not:
- Swapping the primary for a seasonal push. Making Laser hair removal service the primary for a spring package sale can pull you out of the general "med spa" searches that fill your injectables book.
- Adding a category before the device arrives. Add Tattoo removal service when the first patient can actually book, not when the lease is signed.
- Editing everything at once. A new name, new categories and new hours on the same afternoon is the kind of large edit that draws a review. Space changes out.
The Map Pack ranking guide for med spas covers the other relevance signals, and the verification guide covers what to film if a change triggers a new check.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
We review your categories against your actual treatment menu and the med spas that win your searches, then make one change at a time on a dated plan so nothing collides with your busy seasons. The profile stays in your Google account, and we report the result in calls and booked consultations from Maps. Start with a growth consultation and we will tell you whether your categories are costing you patients.
