Key takeaways
- Pressure washing service is the right primary category for almost every operator, because it names the work behind most invoices.
- Add Window cleaning service or Gutter cleaning service only if you sell that work on its own, not because you rinse windows or brighten gutter faces during a house wash.
- House washing, roof soft washing and concrete cleaning belong in the services list when Google has no matching category for them.
- Change categories in the slow season, one at a time, because a change can send the profile back through verification.
The best Google Business Profile category for a pressure washing company is almost always Pressure washing service as the primary, with secondary categories added only for work you sell on its own, such as Window cleaning service or Gutter cleaning service. The primary category decides which searches the profile is considered for, so choose it for revenue, not reach.
Choosing the primary category
Choose the category that names the work behind most of your invoices. For a company whose days are house washes, driveways and storefront sidewalks, that is Pressure washing service. Google treats the primary category as a core relevance signal when it decides which profiles to show for a search (how local ranking works), so a wrong primary costs you calls you never see.
Google's list does not have a category for everything you do. Type "house washing", "soft wash" and "roof cleaning" into the category field and see what appears. Where nothing matches your exact work, that work goes in the services list and on your website, not into a category that only sounds close (managing categories).
A different primary makes sense in one situation: when another service earns most of your money. A window cleaning business that adds a pressure washer for spring is a window cleaner first. Pick the category for the business you run, not the one you hope to grow into.
| Candidate category | Add it when | Leave it off when |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure washing service | You wash houses, concrete, decks, fences or storefronts. This is the primary for most operators. | Almost never, if you own a pressure washer and sell the work |
| Window cleaning service | You clean windows as a priced service, on its own or in a bundle | You only rinse glass as part of a house wash |
| Gutter cleaning service | You clear debris out of gutters and downspouts | You only brighten the gutter faces during a soft wash |
| Roofing contractor | You actually repair or replace roofs | You soft wash roofs. This category pulls leak and replacement calls you cannot take. |
| House cleaning service | You also run an interior cleaning crew | You clean exteriors only. This category brings maid-service searches. |
How categories work for a pressure washing company
- Primary category One: the service most of your work comes from
- Secondary categories Only services you really offer
- Services Listed and described under each category
Secondary categories that fit
Add a secondary category only for a service you would be glad to get a call about tomorrow. Google allows up to nine, and none of them has to be filled. Each one widens the searches you can appear for, so each one should match a service you list, photograph and quote.
The services list does the rest of the work. Under Pressure washing service, add each core service as its own entry with a short, plain description:
- House washing, with the siding types you clean, such as vinyl, stucco and brick
- Roof soft washing, with a line on why you use low pressure on shingles
- Driveway and concrete cleaning, including patios, pool decks and walkways
- Commercial exterior cleaning, covering storefronts, sidewalks, dumpster pads and building fronts
Back each one with photos on the profile and a page on your site. A homeowner comparing three companies for a roof job looks for the word "roof" and a picture of one. Categories get you into the result. The services and photos win the call.
How to check competitors
- Search like a customer. On a phone, from a street inside your service area, search "pressure washing near me", "house washing" and "roof cleaning". Write down the three companies in the map results for each.
- Read each primary category. It appears under the business name on the listing. Note which ones use Pressure washing service and which use something else.
- Look up the secondary categories. These do not show on the listing, so use a browser extension that reads them, and record them next to each competitor.
- Compare services, photos and reviews. If a competitor with the same primary as yours appears for "roof cleaning" and you do not, check their services list, roof photos and reviews that mention roofs. The gap is usually there, not in the category.
- Repeat from the edges of your area. Rankings change with the searcher's location, so check from the towns where you want more work, not only from your driveway.
- Copy only what is true for you. A competitor listed as a roofing contractor may be one, or may be about to have a problem. Add a category only if you do that work.
When not to change categories
Do not change categories in the middle of the season, right after verification, or while another edit is under review. A category change can send the profile back through verification (verification), and a profile stuck in review during April is a phone that stops ringing on the best weekends of the year.
Make category edits in the slow months, and one at a time. Change one thing, wait a few weeks, and compare calls and website clicks before you touch anything else. If you change the primary category, the services list and your business name in the same afternoon, you will not know which change helped or hurt.
Do not add a category to chase a search you do not serve. Listing a business that does not match the real work can break Google's guidelines (the guidelines). It also fills your inbox with leak repairs and maid-service requests your crew cannot take.
For the full profile setup, see the Google Business Profile guide for pressure washing companies. If a category change has triggered a new verification, the verification guide walks through what to film.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
We check your categories and services against the companies that win your area, fix what is wrong in your own Google account, and time any category change for the slow season so spring calls are not put at risk. Each change is a dated project, and we report on the calls and booked jobs that follow. Book a growth consultation and we will review your categories as part of the profile audit.
