Key takeaways
- Google picks the Map Pack on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move the searcher, so work on the other two.
- Relevance for plumbing is service by service: a strong drain cleaning listing can still be invisible for water heater searches.
- A rival that ranks where you do not is usually closer, better categorized or getting more recent reviews. Each has a different fix.
- Google no longer keeps a call history for your profile, so record Maps calls yourself, in your tracking and your job records.
To rank on Google Maps as a plumbing company, Google has to judge you the most relevant, close enough and best established plumber for the person searching. You cannot move the searcher. You can control most of the rest: your categories, services, hours, reviews and photos, and the website page your profile points to.
How the Map Pack picks businesses
Google picks the three Map Pack listings using relevance, distance and prominence, in its own words (Google's explanation).
Relevance is how well your profile matches the exact words typed. For a plumber it works service by service. "Drain cleaning" is checked against your categories, the services you list, the words customers use in their reviews and the page your profile links to. A company that lists drain work in detail and never mentions water heaters can rank for one and be missing for the other.
Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Most emergency searches come from the house with the problem, on a phone. As a service-area business your street address is hidden, but Google still places you at the address you verified (service-area settings). So you rank most easily in the neighborhoods around the shop, and less easily twenty minutes out, even if that area is listed in your service areas.
Prominence is how established you look: how many reviews you have, how recent they are, your rating, and how often you are mentioned and linked around the web.
Hours matter for the calls plumbers want most. People search "plumber open now" and "24 hour plumber" at night and on holidays, and a listing marked closed is easy to skip.
How the Map Pack picks businesses
The Map Pack The local results under the map
- Relevance How well your profile and pages match the search
- Distance How close you are to the searcher or the area searched
- Prominence Reviews, links, mentions and how well known you are
The fixes you control
- Match the categories to the calls you want. Plumber as the primary category, then Drainage service or Water heater installation service where you do that work. See the category guide for plumbing companies.
- Write the services the way customers say them. "Burst pipe repair", "water heater replacement", "sewer camera inspection" and "slab leak detection" match searches better than "full-service residential plumbing".
- Show hours you can staff. If a tech is on call overnight, list the hours and route the line to them. If not, show real hours and set special hours for holidays.
- Point the profile at a fast page with the phone number first. The linked page is part of relevance, and it is where hesitant callers go to check you out.
- Keep reviews arriving every week. A review that says "replaced our water heater the same afternoon" adds relevance for that service as well as prominence.
- Add photos of real jobs and branded vans every month. They prove you are a working shop, not a call broker.
- Remove duplicates and keep your details consistent. Merge an old listing from a former shop address and fix directories that show an old number.
Why competitors outrank you
When a rival ranks where you do not, the cause is usually one of a few specific gaps. Search from the customer's street, not your shop, then compare.
| What you see | Most likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| They show for water heater searches and you do not | They list the service or category, and have a page for it | Add the service, the category if it fits and a water heater page |
| They show fifteen minutes from your shop and you do not | Their verified address is closer to that area | Build a real area page and cover it with ads; never open a fake office |
| They have fewer reviews but rank higher | They are closer, or their reviews are more recent | Steady weekly reviews, not a one-time push |
| They show as open at 11 p.m. and you show closed | Your hours say you are closed | List after-hours coverage if you really answer |
| A listing with a name like "Emergency Plumber 24 Hour" beats you | Keyword names can rank until Google catches them | Suggest an edit, and report it to Google if it looks like a lead broker (Google's guidelines) |
Never answer a fake listing with one of your own. The fake gets removed eventually, and so would yours.
Tracking Map calls
Count Map calls as booked jobs, not as profile views. Google shut down call history on profiles along with chat, so the profile's own reports now give you totals at best, not who called or whether they booked.
Set it up in three places:
- On the profile: put a tag on the website link, so visits from Maps show separately in your analytics (Google Analytics setup). Use a dedicated tracking number for the profile if you use call tracking.
- In the phone system: keep recordings or at least a log of calls to that number, including missed ones after hours.
- In your job records: set the lead source to "Google Maps" on every job booked from those calls in ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber.
Then compare month to month: Maps calls answered, calls missed, and jobs booked. A rise in Maps calls during the first freeze with no rise in booked jobs points at the phone, not the ranking.
The neighborhoods beyond your verified address are the job of service-area pages for plumbing companies.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
We run the Map Pack work as a project: categories, services, hours, review routine and tracking, each with a date. Your profile stays in your name with us as a manager, and you can remove us at any time. We report Maps calls answered and booked, and what they cost, not map positions on a grid. Book a growth consultation and we will show you where you rank from your customers' streets and what is holding you back.
