Key takeaways
- Put scheduled work online: maintenance, tires, inspections, detailing and diagnostic appointments. Keep breakdowns and tow-ins on the phone.
- Instant prices work for fixed-scope services. Repairs need an inspection first, so book the diagnosis, not the repair.
- Turn on the booking tools in Tekmetric or Shopmonkey so appointments land on the shop calendar with no retyping.
- Cap online slots so the morning drop-off rush stays workable, and collect the vehicle details your service writer needs.
Online booking for an auto repair shop pays off for scheduled work: oil changes, tires, inspections, detailing and diagnostic appointments. Drivers now expect to book those the way they book everything else, at night and in seconds. Breakdowns and tow-ins still belong on the phone, and repairs need a diagnosis before anyone can promise a price.
Should auto repair shops offer online booking
Yes, for most of what a shop does. Much of the work is planned: the reminder sticker says the oil is due, the tires are bald before winter, the inspection deadline is next month. Those drivers decide in the evening, after work, when your counter phone is off. If they cannot book you, they book the shop that lets them.
The split looks like this:
| What the driver needs | Book online? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change or scheduled maintenance | Yes | Fixed time, fixed scope |
| Tire install or rotation | Yes, with tire size collected | You can check stock before they arrive |
| Safety or emissions inspection | Yes, if you are a licensed station | Deadline-driven and easy to schedule |
| Check engine light | Yes, as a diagnostic appointment | You book the time, not the repair |
| Brake noise or a vibration | Yes, as an inspection | The fix depends on what you find |
| Detailing | Yes, by package | Clear packages, clear time blocks |
| Car will not start, or is being towed in | No, call | They need a person and an answer now |
| Major repair quote from another shop | Call or form | The service writer needs to talk it through |

Booking vs instant quotes
Booking sells a time. An instant quote sells a price, and in auto repair a price is only honest when the scope is fixed.
Fixed-scope work can carry a price online: an oil change for a given engine size, mounting and balancing four tires, a detail package, an inspection fee. Show it and let the driver book straight from the price.
Repairs cannot. Two cars with the same squeal can need pads, or pads, rotors and a caliper. Quoting brake work online before a technician looks either scares off the cheap job or starts a fight over the expensive one. Book the diagnosis instead. Then send the real estimate after the digital inspection, with photos, for the customer to approve by text. That is the instant answer drivers actually want: fast, specific and backed by a picture of their own car.
Setting it up with your software
- List the bookable services. Pick the services from the table above that your shop takes online, and give each one a time block your technicians agree with.
- Turn on booking in your shop management software. Tekmetric and Shopmonkey both offer online appointments, built in or through a connected tool, depending on your plan. Bookings then land on the same calendar the service writer runs.
- Cap the online slots. Limit how many online drop-offs land in the first hour of the day, and hold bay time back for waiters and tow-ins.
- Put the link everywhere a driver looks. The website header, every service page, and the booking link on your Google Business Profile.
- Set up text confirmations and reminders. Business texting needs A2P 10DLC registration of your brand and campaign (The Campaign Registry), and marketing messages need consent and a working STOP (messaging principles). If your shop software sends the texts, ask the vendor how registration is handled before you add a second texting tool.
- Tag the source. Record whether each booking came from the website, the profile or an ad, so it can be matched to a repair order later.
Preventing bad bookings
Bad bookings in a repair shop are no-shows, wrong vehicles and work you do not do. A few fields and messages prevent most of them.
- Vehicle first. Year, make and model up front, and mileage if the service depends on it. Ask for tire size when they book tires.
- The symptom, in their words. "Grinding when I brake" gives the technician a head start on the diagnostic.
- Waiter or drop-off. Ask which, so you do not book three waiters into one hour with one lounge.
- Say what you do not service. Diesels, European imports, hybrids, fleet trucks: whatever you turn away, put it on the booking page.
- Key drop instructions. If customers can drop off after hours, the confirmation text says where the key box is and what to write on the envelope.
Reminders matter beyond the first booking. A shop's best customers are the ones who come back on schedule, and the repeat customer guide covers the mileage-based reminders that bring them back.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
We decide with you which services go online, connect booking to your Tekmetric or Shopmonkey calendar, and put the link on your site and Google profile. The accounts stay in your name, the setup is scoped with a finish date, and we report bookings that became repair orders. See our website design work for auto repair shops, or book a growth consultation and we will show you where bookings are slipping today.
