Key takeaways
- Pick the primary category from last season's revenue: asphalt-led shops lean Paving contractor or Asphalt contractor, flatwork-led shops lean Concrete contractor.
- Add a secondary category only for work a customer could hire you to do on its own, such as concrete for an asphalt shop that pours driveways.
- Check the companies that win the map for driveway, patio and parking lot searches before you copy anything.
- Change categories in the off-season, one edit at a time, because edits to core details can send the profile back for review.
The best Google Business Profile categories for a paving company mirror the work that pays the bills. Set one primary category for the service behind most of last season's revenue, usually Paving contractor, Concrete contractor or Asphalt contractor, then add secondaries only for work your crews really do. A primary that is wrong quietly costs you driveway and parking lot calls.
Choosing the primary category
Choose the primary category from what your crews actually spent last season doing, not from what you hope to sell more of. Google uses categories to judge which searches a profile is relevant to (Google on categories). Relevance sits beside distance and prominence as one of the three inputs Google names for local results (Google on local ranking).
Most paving businesses fall into one of three shapes, and each points to a different primary:
| Candidate category | Fits as primary when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Paving contractor | Asphalt driveways, resurfacing and lot paving are most of the revenue | It is the broad choice; back it up with services that name asphalt and sealcoating |
| Asphalt contractor | Asphalt is the only material you place, often with heavy commercial lot work | Type it into the category box and use it only if Google offers it in your list |
| Concrete contractor | Concrete driveways, patios, walks and slabs lead the year | A poor primary if concrete is a few jobs between paving runs |
| Masonry contractor | Paver patios and walls your own crews lay | A secondary at most for a paving shop |
| Excavating contractor | You sell grading, site prep and base work as their own jobs | Not for the dig-out that comes with every driveway |
| General contractor | Rarely | Too broad; it puts you against builders and remodelers |
If you split close to evenly between asphalt and concrete, choose the primary that matches the searches you most want to win next season, and let the secondary carry the other material.
How categories work for a paving company
- Primary category One: the service most of your work comes from
- Secondary categories Only services you really offer
- Services Listed and described under each category
Secondary categories that fit
Add a secondary only when it names work a customer could hire you for on its own. An asphalt company that also pours concrete driveways adds Concrete contractor. A concrete company that paves asphalt drives adds Paving contractor. A shop whose crews lay pavers for patios can add Masonry contractor.
Some of your work will not have a category of its own. Sealcoating, crack filling and line striping usually live in the services section of the profile, on your website and in reviews that mention them. Commercial work is the same: property managers and HOAs find you through services, a commercial page and photos of lots, not through a separate "commercial" category.
If your trucks plow commercial lots in winter, a snow removal category can be a fair secondary, provided Google offers one when you type it into the category box. Keep it on all year rather than adding it when the plants close and pulling it in spring.
How to check competitors
- Search like your customers do. From a phone, standing somewhere in the middle of your service area, search "asphalt driveway paving", "concrete patio contractor", "parking lot repair" and "sealcoating near me". Note the three map results for each.
- Write down each winner's primary category. It appears under the business name in the Maps listing. Expect different winners for driveway, patio and lot searches.
- Look for their extra categories. Third-party browser tools can show them. Treat what they show as a lead to check, not a fact.
- Read their services and reviews. A competitor that wins every lot search probably has services, photos and reviews about lots, not just the right category.
- Copy only what matches your crews. If the winner for patio searches is a masonry outfit and you do not lay pavers, that category is not yours.
- Log the change and the date. Record what you changed and when, then watch calls by service over the next few weeks of the season.
When not to change categories
Leave categories alone in mid-season, in the weeks right after verification, and on any day you also edit the name, phone or service area. Edits to core details can send a profile back for review or ask you to verify again (Google on verification), and a profile under review in May is a profile that is not ringing.
Make category work a winter job. Change one thing, wait, and check calls before touching the next. Never add Asphalt contractor in spring and Concrete contractor in fall to chase demand. Swapping back and forth confuses customers and gives Google no stable signal.
Categories are one piece of a complete profile. The Google Business Profile guide for paving companies covers the rest, and the Map Pack ranking guide explains how relevance, distance and prominence work together.
How VETS Growth Marketing helps
Category work with us starts from last season's revenue split and the profiles that win your driveway, patio and lot searches. Each edit is made in your own Google account over the winter, one at a time with its date logged, and the report afterward shows calls and signed projects by service. In a growth consultation we will check whether your primary category matches the work you most want next season.
